    WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR?

Sunrisers Hyderabad [SRH] won the ninth edition of the IPL after beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight runs in the final.

Going into the tournament, the Sunrisers weren’t one of the fancied teams, but some outstanding batting from captain David Warner and bowling from the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mustafizur Rahman saw them lift the trophy.

Warner led from the front with the bat, notching up 848 runs at an incredible average of 60.57 and a strike-rate of over 150.

Bhuvneshwar, on the other hand, won the Purple Cap for picking up the most wickets [23] in the tournament, while Mustafizur bowled at an economy rate of less than seven despite bowling a lot of overs at the end of the innings.

SRH had actually finished the league stage of the competition in third place and became the first side to win the IPL after finishing outside the top two since the introduction of the playoffs system in 2011.

    WHAT IS NEW THIS YEAR?

In signing Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan, SRH created history at the auction this year, by becoming the first IPL franchise to sign Afghanistan players.

While SRH had the best fast bowling unit in the IPL last season – a major reason why they won the tournament – their spin bowling department lacked depth and the addition of Nabi and Rashid should be of great help with regards to that.

The Hyderabad-based franchise also secured the services of 45-year-old leg-spinner Pravin Tambe who will add more depth to the spin bowling department.

Already having some top fast bowlers in their ranks, the addition of England pacer Chris Jordan, Australia’s Ben Laughlin, and young Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj gives the Warner-led team more options.

They also bought promising young batsman Tanmay Agarwal and wicket-keeper Ekalavya Dwivedi in the auction. The latter has an impressive average of 35.40 in T20 cricket.

    HOW WILL THEY DO?

The Sunrisers seem to have most areas covered and will be expected to do well as they look to defend the IPL crown.

It is often seen in T20 cricket that a good bowling line-up is very important and that is something SRH know better than most, having won the title last season on the back of some marvellous bowling.

It would come as a big surprise if the SunRisers do not make the playoffs with the team they possess.
