Kylian Mbappe made history on Sunday by becoming the first player to named both player of the year and young player of the year at the prestigious Trophees UNFP (French Professional Footballers Association) awards ceremony in Paris.

The 20-year-old will be in contention for more prizes at the conclusion of 2019 after a campaign which saw him break through the 30-goal barrier in Ligue 1.

Indeed, only Lionel Messi scored more league goals than Mbappe this season.

The Barcelona icon is the natural favourite to claim the Ballon d’Or and Mbappe was asked at the awards who he believed would claim football’s premier individual prize.

“Messi, despite the elimination (Barcelona were beaten by Liverpool in Champions League semi-final), it does not change anything,” he said.

“He is the number one. He has shown he was the best player this year. The year will take us up to December but I’m not worried about him, he is going to play until December.”
