  • Lionel Messi claims he holds no secrets to success after winning the Best FIFA Men’s Player award in Milan on Monday.

The Barcelona and Argentina forward edged out UEFA Men’s Player of the Year winner Virgil van Dijk and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi, who has been voted the world’s best for the sixth time, scored a mesmerising 54 goals in 58 games last season for club and country.

“There’s no secret, the only thing is that I always work hard and I give my best to keep improving and desire to win more titles, everything else comes after,” the Argentine said.

Megan Rapinoe, who played a key role as the United States won the Women’s World Cup in France, claimed the Best FIFA Women’s Player Award.

Rapinoe beat her international team-mate Alex Morgan and UEFA Women’s Player of the Year winner Lucy Bronze to the prize.

Jurgen Klopp, who led Liverpool to the UEFA Champions League title last season, claimed the Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award, ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Mauricio Pochettino and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola.
