The Indian cricket team, in the fifth and final ODI of their series against New Zealand, are sporting the names of their mothers on the back of their jerseys.

By displaying their mothers’ names, the players paid homage to their mothers poignantly.

Speaking at the toss, Indian captain MS Dhoni said: “We are quite used to having the surnames from the dad’s side, and what’s important is to appreciate the stuff that mothers have done for us.

“It’s a very emotional connect and it’s good that it is put on a public platform. I would like to request the whole of India to keep this in mind every day and appreciate them everyday.”

Earlier, Star Plus – who are the sponsors of the Indian cricket team – launched a Nayi Soch [new thought] campaign, which is trying to break stereotypes that exist against women in society.

Dhoni, along with Indian Test captain Virat Kohli and Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, are seen in different advertisements speaking about their respective mother’s contribution to who they’ve become today.
