  • German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has revealed that he is excited for the 2018 World Cup in Russia having to miss out on the 2014 edition that his team won.

Defending champions Germany have been drawn in Group F alongside South Korea, Mexico and Sweden – and face the Mexicans first on June 17.

They will however be facing Austria and Saudi Arabia in the build-up to their tournament.

“Yes, I’m looking forward to it. I missed the last two big tournaments, the Euro’s in 2016 and the World Cup in 2014 and especially the last World Cup that we have won, it was quite difficult for me because of an injury so this is now the next chance for me to take part in a big tournament with a great team and I’m really looking forward to it,” Gundogan said.

“I need to try and stay fit now and try to keep my fitness level and my form and just to play a great World Cup and maybe even win it again.”

Meanwhile, the 27-year old also had a memorable campaign with his club side Manchester City, who cruised to victory in the Premier League and also etched a few records in the process.

When asked what was the best moment according to him in what was a terrific season for Pep Guardiola’s side, Gundogan couldn’t single out any one.

“That’s so difficult as the season was so amazing. It started amazing and the finish was even better, we didn’t dream about such an ending when it all started and they were so many good moments, so many enjoyable moments that I think at the end it was special all the way through,” he explained.

“Everything through the Premier League through to the Cup, we have won but also through the losses. They are part of the season, part of the game, part of our careers and I do believe that these kind of memories and experiences make you stronger.

“All the way with my team mates, with my manager and with the staff, with this great club and with all the supporters.”
