The Abu Dhabi Tour has accrued substantial praise since its inception in 2015 as part of the Asia Tour. Cycling’s governing body the UCI were so impressed with the event, they promoted the city to top-tier status ahead of this, the third edition.
The Abu Dhabi Tour began its climb to world popularity by occupying the Asia Tour calendar slot formerly held in Beijing. Working in conjunction with RCS Sport, the team behind the Giro d’Italia, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council has helped propel the capital city into cycling stardom, earning the UCI’s favour with a spot on th 2017 UCI World Tour.
As with previous races, the competition features three flat stages and a single mountain stage leading to a summit finish at the Jebel Hafeet – the peak lies at an elevation of 1,025 metres.
The first edition of the Abu Dhabi Tour was won by Esteban Chaves, while Estonian cyclist Tanel Kangert was the last triumphant man.
