  • Sachin Tendulkar and Javed Miandad: Six World Cup tournaments and one trophy apiece for India and Pakistan.

The Cricket World Cup kicks off in six days in Australia; Sport360 takes a look at the magic behind the number '6', with Sachin Tendulkar and Javed Miandad's legendary longevity.

Indian batting god Sachin Tendulkar and Pakistan’s legendary batting maestro Javed Miandad are two players who stand apart from the rest in terms of the Cricket World Cup pantheon. They are the only players to have played in six tournaments.

It is not only the longevity that is impressive, but the impact they has in the tournaments in which they played; both Tendulkar and Miandad made their presence felt on the field.

Tendulkar, who played in successive World Cups between 1992 and 2011, sits as the leading run-scorer in history of the competition with 2278 runs coming from 45 matches at a staggering average of 56.95.

What is also interesting about Tendulkar is the fact that he scored exactly six centuries in his World Cup career, along with 15 fifties; he finally won the most important trophy of his career at his last attempt as India won the World Cup on home soil in 2011.

Meanwhile, Miandad’s world cup legacy stretches from 1975-1996, during whichtime  he represented Pakistan in 33 matches, contributing 1083 runs to his team’s cause at a decent average of 43.32 – scoring a lone century and eight fifties.

Miandad’s reward came in 1992 when Pakistan won the World Cup against the odds, with Miandad played a number of matches despite being severely ill and playing against doctors’ advice.

Considering how fast cricket has become and the way the burden has increased on players, it appears unlikely that the pair’s record will ever be broken.
