  • The Calisthenics Amateur Cup is a competition designed so that people in and out of the Calisthenics community in Dubai can have a chance to test their calisthenics skills against others of the same or similar level.

Calisthenics, which basically refers to exercise which uses one’s body weight for resistance, can range from basic push-ups at beginner level to more advanced movements like the human flag.

But leaving the more advanced stuff out, this competition will focus on those who are beginner to intermediate level, with two divisions to enter: introductory and amateur. To give you an idea of the entry level requirement, it’s one push-up, one pull-up, a wall handstand, squat and lunge – so pretty accessible to those who are just starting out. The amateur level requirements are five strict push-ups, five strict pull-ups, 10 seconds of free standing handstand and five pistol squats.

The competition’s creator, Francesca Carlson, a calisthenics practitioner herself, says that the competition is the first in the region to cater to all levels of calisthenics practitioners, and “has been brought about to raise awareness of calisthenics as a fantastic form of training and way to get fit”.

Cool! If you’re interested, you can sign up either as an individual or a team of five. The competition takes place on 26th February at the Warehouse Gym’s outdoor gym on The Beach, JBR. Check out the competition’s Facebook page for more details!
