Eight teams will be in each group with the top sides advancing to the knock-out stages. Matches take place between 19:00 and 22:30 with each side playing one 40-minute game per week. Squads must consist of no more than 15 players.

As UAE’s biggest sport and social club with over 5,000 members, Duplays knows a thing or two in organising leagues and tournaments. Their portfolio includes volleyball, football and badminton and it’s no surprise that basketball has been a huge success.

“Our basketball leagues have been hugely popular since we introduced it into our programme,” said Kris Belen, league administrator at Duplays.

“We always have a lot of teams interested and this one is no exception. Half of the places are filled up and there are people who are interested but they are waiting for their players to return from their holidays before signing up. For sure, I think the league will be another successful event.”

Buzzer Beat: there will be great prizes on offer.

Team entries cost Dh3,500 and with attractive prizes up for grabs, Belen insists there’s plenty of positives to gain from taking part.

“It’s great fun and very exciting because there’s a great atmosphere and a friendly vibe during the matches,” she said.

“It’s a great way to meet new people and play a sport which is very popular in the UAE. We will have some teams returning for this league but it will be great to have some new faces and teams taking part.”

She added: “There will be some great prizes to win and the league will be well-organised with referees following the FIBA rules.”
