MS Dhoni resigned as India’s limited overs captain last week, but was named skipper of the India A team to face England in a warm-up match.
The game allowed Dhoni to lead his country for a final time, which saw fans turn out in their droves to give of the cricket’s greatest captains a deservedly warm send-off.
The appearance of the returning Yuvraj Singh to the fold also boosted attendance, both delivering half centuries to the delight of a fervent Mumbai crowd.
“Good for them to turn up. The fact that they’ve turned up for a warm-up game shows they love me. For someone like Yuvi, I’d like to give him a bit more time with the ball,” said Dhoni at the toss.
The 35-year-old will still be captain of the Rising Pune Supergiants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and could skipper his state team Jharkhand when he turns out for them in limited overs matches.
“Of course, this is my last game as captain. I’ll still be captaining in the IPL and maybe the Jharkhand team. Thanks to the fans, they’ve been behind me for a long time,” said Dhoni.
Dhoni ended up scoring an unbeaten 68 from just 40 deliveries, much to the delight of the fans in attendance.
